The highly anticipated trailer for One Battle After Another, the latest film from acclaimed director Paul Thomas Anderson, has finally arrived. Featuring an all-star cast led by Leonardo DiCaprio, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, Benicio del Toro, Sean Penn, Chase Infiniti, and Alana Haim, the Warner Bros. production promises a gripping and timely story.
While official plot details remain under wraps, the film is known to be based on Thomas Pynchon’s 1990 novel Vineland. According to IndieWire, DiCaprio plays Bob Ferguson, a civil rights activist who aligns with an anti-government group to confront a white supremacist organization. Taylor, Hall, and Haim portray fellow activists, while Penn takes on the role of a white nationalist leader. Infiniti stars as Ferguson’s daughter.
The novel’s description offers some insight into the film’s tone:
“Here, in an Orwellian 1984, Zoyd Wheeler and his daughter Prairie search for Prairie’s long-lost mother, a Sixties radical who ran off with a narc. Vineland is vintage Pynchon, full of quasi-allegorical characters, elaborate unresolved subplots, corny songs (‘Floozy with an Uzi’), movie spoofs (Pee-wee Herman in The Robert Musil Story), and illicit sex (including a macho variation on the infamous sportscar scene in V.).”
Though the trailer hints at multiple time periods, the film is reportedly set in the present day, adding a contemporary urgency to its themes.
DiCaprio personally unveiled the trailer on YouTube, generating major buzz ahead of the film’s September 26 release. Produced by Anderson, Adam Somner, and Sara Murphy, with Will Weiske serving as executive producer, One Battle After Another is shaping up to be one of the year’s most talked-about dramas.
