PRINCE: Controversial Netflix Documentary
Written by Ariel Newbold on February 7, 2025
Netflix and Prince’s estate agreed to shelve a six part, nine-hour documentary series about the late singer in favor of an authorized film “featuring exclusive content from Prince’s archive.”
The estate objected to the docu-series from director Ezra Edelman on a technicality. The contract for the project called for a six-hour documentary. On this basis, the estate withheld song rights to Prince’s hits.
Behind-the-scenes the estate vetoed Edelman’s docu-series because it focused less on Prince’s musical legacy and more on his sex life and drug abuse. An ex-girlfriend of Prince sat for an interview and accused him of physical and emotional abuse.
A source said (quote) “It made no sense. That docu-series was petty and no one would have watched it. It did nothing for Prince’s legacy.” (Showbiz 411)
