BEYONCE: Sued Over Renaissance Hit
Written by on May 23, 2024
Beyonce is being sued over one of her Renaissance hits.
A new complaint against the Queen Bey and her label, Sony Music, alleges that they jacked a 2002 song from the New Orleans-based group Da Showstoppaz and flipped it into “Break My Soul.” Big Freedia, who is sampled on “Break My Soul” also factors into the situation — as Da Showstoppaz claim Freedia’s song, “Explode” stole lyrics from Da Showstoppaz’ “Release a Wiggle.”
The lawsuit, filed in Louisiana Federal Court alleges “While Mrs. Carter…and others have received many accolades and substantial profits…Da Showstoppaz’s have received nothing—no acknowledgment, no credit, no remuneration of any kind.” Da Showstoppaz’ legal reps also claim that Big Freedia’s use of these phrases in their single “Explode” infringes on the group’s copyrights, contributing to the artist’s fame without crediting them.
