Here’s some inspiring news. Usher Raymond IV, the Grammy-winning R&B icon, has been chosen as the keynote speaker for Emory University’s 180th Commencement ceremony. Along with delivering his speech, the “King of R&B” will be honored with an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree.
The R&B icon, known for his philanthropic efforts, will address graduates at Emory’s iconic Quadrangle in Atlanta. His words are expected to inspire the new students as they embark on their next chapter in life. “I have spent my life following my spark — my passion — and trying to support young people as they find and follow their own passions,” Usher shared in a press release. “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to speak to these incredible Emory students as they graduate and prepare to make their mark on the world.”
Here’s how Emory University’s President, Gregory L. Fenves, praised Usher’s profound impact on the music industry: “There are few artists in the history of popular music who have innovated as ceaselessly as Usher. Through acclaimed albums, era-defining songs, global tours and live performances that showcase his peerless talent as a singer, songwriter and dancer, Usher has connected profoundly with generations of fans, building a dedicated audience that continues to grow.”
If unaware, in addition to his music career, Usher has made a significant impact through his philanthropy. Since 1999, his nonprofit organization, Usher’s New Look (UNL), has empowered over 55,000 underprivileged youth. Based in Atlanta, UNL helps students discover their potential through education and community service, focusing on middle and high school students. The organization partners with Emory’s Goizueta Business School to offer programs like “Powered by Service,” which introduces middle schoolers to leadership, financial literacy, and career exploration. For high school students, UNL’s Leadership Academy provides a comprehensive four-year, 400-hour training program focused on graduation, college preparation, and service.
According to the nonprofit, 100% of Leadership Academy participants graduate high school, with 98% continuing to college, and 86% of those students are the first in their families to attend. “New Look fills a critical need by stepping up to help students realize their potential,” Fenves added. “Emory University has been proud to partner with this incredible organization over the years.”
If you want to stay in the know, Usher will give his commencement address and receive his honorary doctorate on May 12, 2025, marking a special moment in his illustrious career.
