On this date in Hip Hop history, DJ Kool released his monumental single “Let Me Clear My Throat,” now celebrating 30 years as one of the most electrifying party records the culture has ever seen.
Released in 1996 as the final single from his debut LP of the same name on American Recordings and Warner Bros.’ Blackout! imprint, the record quickly became a staple not just in Hip Hop, but in any setting where energy and crowd control matter.
What made the track instantly iconic was its live feel. The most recognized version was recorded at Philadelphia’s Bahama Bay Club, capturing real time audience reactions, chants, and call and response moments that gave the song its raw, interactive edge. It was not just a song, it was an experience.
Produced by DJ Kool alongside Mark The 45 King and Funkmaster Flex, the track masterfully flipped classic elements of funk and Hip Hop. It features samples from Kool & The Gang’s “Hollywood Swinging,” Marva Whitney’s “Unwind Yourself,” and “The 900 Number,” one of the most recognizable breaks crafted by the 45 King. Even its signature phrase, “let me clear my throat,” traces back to the Beastie Boys’ 1986 track “The New Style.”
Three decades later, the record’s impact is still undeniable. From clubs to weddings to arenas, “Let Me Clear My Throat” remains a guaranteed crowd mover. Its influence has stretched into the sports world as well, with teams like the Nebraska Cornhuskers using it for introductions, while the Milwaukee Brewers have incorporated it into their in game celebrations at American Family Field following home runs.
At its core, the record represents a time when DJs controlled the room and the energy was built in real time. DJ Kool delivered a track that bottled that moment and made it timeless.
Thirty years later, it still does exactly what it was designed to do: move the crowd.
Salute to DJ Kool for creating a certified classic that continues to shake rooms around the world.
