Hawaii’s Mauna Loa, World’s Largest Active Volcano, Erupts For The First Time In 38 Years

On Sunday night (November 27), the volcano, which is one of five volcanoes that form the Island of Hawai’i in the Pacific Ocean, had a rare dual-eruption event with a nearby volcano, Kilauea. Now it’s been reported that the neighboring volcano has been erupting since 2021.

As officials keep a close and careful eye on the volcanic sites, residents of the areas are also remaining on alert, despite no immediate risks to nearby communities. The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency said “there are NO indications” that the lava flow poses as any type of threat to populated areas nearby.

Meanwhile, an Ashfall Advisory was issued for the island up through Monday morning (November 28). About a quarter inch of ash was expected to fall down the volcano, per the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency. Again, it is reported that back in 1984 was the last time to volcano last erupted. Per the U.S. Geological Survey, Mauna Loa is coming off its “longest quiet period on record.” The 1984 eruption had a lava flow that nearly missed the largest population center of the island, by about 4.5 miles.
